Taxonomy Recognition Day brings together museums from 7 different countries

Did you know that Taxonomy Recognition Day (TRD) was held in 7 different countries at the same time?

Taxonomy Recognition Day took place on May 23rd, and, moreover, it aimed to highlight the importance of taxonomy in saving each species. Indeed, each species has a story; however, without a name, that story can never be told.

Second edition of the TRD

This year marked the second edition of the Taxonomy Recognition Day, and notably, some of the participants included the Natural History Museum of Crete, the Natural History Museum of Vienna, the University of Madeira, the Finnish Natural History Museum, the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, and the Institute of Natural Sciences of Brussels.

Furthermore, they all carried out a variety of activities, such as expert talks, discussions, behind-the-scenes visits, practical workshops, and networking opportunities.

#NameItToSaveIt campaign

In order to raise awareness about the importance of taxonomy and its critical role in our world, the #NameItToSaveIt campaign was created. The purpose was to encourage people to take a photo of a plant, animal, fungus or microbe that fascinates them, find its scientific name and share it on social media with the tag #NameItToSaveIt.

This social media campaign was seen and shared by people and institutions around the world. Reaching over 700,000 people. We would like to build on this momentum with the #NameItToSaveIt campaign.

An estimated one million species are endangered today, and there are countless more to discover. Naming a species is the first essential step in protecting it. Taxonomy is central to progress in agriculture, health, environmental conservation and decision-making. Without it, our ability to understand, preserve and restore the biodiversity that sustains life on Earth would be impossible.
