TETTRIs aims to enhance taxonomy by showcasing the diverse career paths of taxonomists and demonstrating the broad applicability of taxonomic knowledge.
Taxonomists are classically dedicated to the identification, description, classification, and naming of species. Most importantly, taxonomists are biodiversity experts, and as such indispensable in our endeavour to understand and prevent the biodiversity crisis. Their deep knowledge is crucial across various sectors such as environmental consultancy, biotechnology, agriculture, and policymaking. Their interdisciplinary expertise not only enriches other sectors but also advances taxonomy itself, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of biodiversity science.
This point is best illustrated by the wide range of opportunities available for those with taxonomic training and best told by those who walked this path already. We conducted interviews with specialists in diverse fields to portray their careers and how taxonomists are not confined to academia and research but are increasingly vital across industries. As the demand for taxonomic expertise grows, particularly in light of the urgent need to address the biodiversity crisis, the next generation of taxonomists will find themselves at the forefront of societal transformation efforts. Their contributions will be crucial in developing sustainable solutions and informing policies that aim to preserve our planet’s rich biological heritage.
