Denmark’s aim to integrate taxonomy in schools takes center stage at TRD meetings

Denmark celebrated Taxonomy Recognition Day with a focus on educational reform. Over the years, taxonomy has been increasingly overlooked in academic curricula. Today, it is possible for a Master of Science graduate in biology to have received no formal training in species recognition. To address this, the Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) organized a meeting in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Science.

The meeting brought together representatives from various sectors, including educators, scout leaders, politicians, and academics. This roundtable discussion marked the beginning of an initiative to integrate taxonomy into the curricula of public schools, high schools, and universities. The event and its objectives even made headlines in the national media.

Looking ahead, the NHMD plans to gather signatures for a long-term strategy to ensure the inclusion of taxonomy in educational institutions.
